Ellis is a young woman living in Ireland in the 1950s and working in a grocery shop. She has greater ambitions and decides to leave her family behind to start a new life in New York. Her homesickness eventually fades as she finds a job, starts a book-keeping course and meets a nice young man. However, a tragedy at home in Ireland compels her to make the journey back alone, which is when her life starts to get more complicated.
