A British historical drama set in 1916 in the fictional Yorkshire town of Ramsden, where World War I has drained the local choral society of its adult male singers. When the choir’s conductor joins the army, the committee controversially appoints Dr Henry Guthrie, a demanding and unconventional choirmaster whose German connections, atheism and private life make him an object of suspicion. As rehearsals progress however, music becomes a fragile refuge for the community, offering moments of beauty, solidarity and quiet resistance amid grief, prejudice and the inexorable pull of war.
